Every dollar, every prayer helps pave the way toward a better life.
Imagine, for a moment...you’re lying in bed in the exact same position for hours, unable to shift yourself or roll over when you feel uncomfortable. You’re cold, but can’t pull up your blanket. Or you’re hot, but can’t peel off your covers. Your scalp itches from the narcotics you're using for chronic neuropathic pain control, but you cannot scratch it (& you're still in pain). In the morning, you can’t give yourself a nice, hot shower in privacy. Someone else has to bathe you.
Picture this...you have lost all control of your bladder. You now depend on a catheter every day & night. If you're a woman, every 5-6 hours someone has to get you out of your wheelchair, lay you on your back, undress your lower half, then catheterize you in quite a humiliating position. Wherever you go, whatever you do, there is no escape from this vital necessity. So life has to be planned around your cath times.
That’s only a little taste of what my life has been like since I was paralyzed from the chest down in a car accident over 12 years ago. Cynthia’s Hope Fund was created to help me raise at least $70,000 by December 2008 to pay for my scheduled experimental stem cell treatment, called an olfactory ensheathing cell (OEC) transplant, by Dr. Huang Hongyun in Beijing, China, plus travel & therapy expenses. OECs are stem cells inside of the nasal cavity, which are injected around the injured area of the spinal cord to promote nerve regrowth. At this time, receiving the OEC procedure is the best chance I have at regaining enough function in my hands, & relieving my severe pain, to live a better quality of life. (There’s a chance I could even get back on my feet again. Who knoes? Miracles do happen.) Click here to read more of my story...
So far, Cynthia’s Hope Fund has raised about $50,000. We have $20,000 left to go by the end of 2008, when I’m scheduled to fly to Beijing. Please help us reach our goal, not only to give me hope, but to keep hope alive in thousands of others enduring pain & paralysis today, & in those who will suffer spinal cord injuries tomorrow. Now, think about what it would be like...whenever your family or friends bent down to try to awkwardly hug you in your wheelchair, & you can't put your arms around them at all. You usually end up getting a quick peck on the forehead, or a light hand tap on your upper back. Even more heartbreaking is your inability to hold a child or your pet. You miss the feeling of human touch. I mean secure, loving embraces with your parents & siblings. Close, affectionate hugs with your friends. And warm, intimate cuddling with a beau or spouse. Just having the ability to clasp hands with others would help give you a better sense of connection to the people in your life.
